Instructor: Libby Hess
Overview
Clinical medical assistants (CMAs) are members of healthcare teams who perform a variety of tasks in medical settings. They are often the first and last person a patient interacts with, so they can have a lasting impact on the patient's experience.
Some of the duties of a CMA include:
-
Patient care
Assisting physicians and nurses with patient exams and treatments, taking vital signs, and preparing patients for procedures.
-
Office operations
Coordinating patient scheduling, managing patient records, and answering phone calls.
-
Laboratory procedures
Collecting and processing specimens for testing, performing EKGs, and phlebotomy.
-
Other tasks
Sterilizing medical equipment, administering medications or injections under supervision, and maintaining supplies
* The job market for medical assistants is expected to grow 16% through 2031, which is much faster than the average job. In May 2023, the median annual wage for medical assistants was $42,000.
